GREAT LEAP FORWARD, Project on the city 2002
During 1996-97, Harvard Graduate School of Design's Project on the City students focused on China's Pearl River Delta, a cluster of five cities undergoing a rapid and unrestricted capitalist development producing an entirely new urban substance. The book presents thesis essays which explore the problematic results of this forced modernization with a focus on five areas: ideology, landscape, architecture, money, and infrastructure. Because of the many and varied forms the collected research and documentation took on, the resulting 800-page book was designed to be a sort of annotated atlas, dense with maps, information graphs, writing, reflections, photographs, and anecdotes.
